Description
My favorite historical figures are Mary Read and Anne Bonny, a pair of pirate lasses that were with Calico Jack up until he was hung in 1720. The women are reported to have said to him at the trial: "If ye hadn't have been such a coward, they wouldn't be hanging ye now!" They got out of being hanged due to the fact that both were pregnant at the time of their trial.
Bonny and Read are also rumored to have been lovers as well, which is why I chose to use them for my Pride Month piece. I used the color red, because 1. it symbolizes life and 2. there is an old sailor's saying that goes "Red sky at night, sailor's delight. Red sky in morning, sailors take warning". The two come together in a piece that I am proud to say is my best work as of yet.
